Welcome Mat originated from the need of a local university for a resident life management system that could perform automatic room assignments based on complex and variable criteria. Other systems they investigated, and even the one they were currently using did not have the ability to capture, score and assign clusters of students to available rooms the way they needed. This meant that approximately 40% to 50% of qualified student applications were still being manually assigned. The university needed a comprehensive system that would serve all their resident life management needs including the flexibility to revise room configurations as needed, accept room deposits made by credit card through the internet with secure access and approval, just to name a few components previously unavailable from existing sources.

Beacon Technologies, Inc. created a system that operates the way colleges and universities need a resident life management system to work. That is, in addition to the daily management tasks, taking the most complex and laborious processes and automating them in a way that would be 1, efficient and quick, and 2, customizable so that it could be personalized for any college or university.
